Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27 1924 - April 3 1990) was an American jazz singer. Nicknamed "Sassy" and "The Divine One", she won four Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. She was given an NEA Jazz Masters Award in 1989. Critic Scott Yanow wrote that she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century". On June 30 1984, an historic concert took place in the Tonhalle, the famous concert hall of Dusseldork, West Germany. The event was the culmination of 3 years of work by artists of 19 nationalities. The star of the concert was Sarah Vaughan. She sang a cycle of songs based on poems written years earlier by a young Polish priest named Karol Wpjtyla who would become the first non-Italian Pope in 4 centuries and take the name of John Paul II. The orchestra of 70 includes Art Farmer, Benny Bailey, Edmund Thigpen and was conducted by Lalo Schifrin.
